The Newark community was out protesting against violence after a man was murdered in broad daylight, police believe, for the chain he wore around his neck.
More than a dozen showed up to protest at the corner where Sutan Johnson was shot Saturday. Police say he was standing on the corner, talking to a friend when a man jumped out of a car and demanded he turn over the gold chain he was wearing. The attacker then opened fire and killed Johnson.
Community members, clergy members and activists say they are disgusted by what they call a lack of respect for human life. They held a prayer vigil as well.
The crowd held signs calling for an end to the violence and for more witnesses to come forward to help police catch the killer.
People at the vigil say there is no excuse to be afraid to call police with any information. Police say they have two hotlines set up and callers can remain anonymous. They are offering a $2,000 reward for anyone with information.
