It’s just one more Sunday until the NFL returns, and as if COVID-19 wasn’t enough to worry about, the New York Jets have been battling an onslaught of injuries throughout training camp.
“We were looking into rolling in today and our only running backs were Frank and Le'Veon and those two guys, their attitude was great, more reps for us and I'm like no that's not great, we're 28 and 37, we've got to be smart here,” says head coach Adam Gase.
The Jets are not only thin at running back, but they've also suffered several injuries to the wide receiving core, including Breshad Perriman and second round draft pick, Denzel Mims -- as well as some defensive players. Gase says the current situation has been a good learning experience for quarterback Sam Darnold.
“You got to trust those guys to do their job, these guys have been working hard just because they haven't been with you it's the next man up mentality,” says Gase. “We expect them to do their job directly and if you're confident in them, then their confidence will be high as well and they'll make the plays you need.
Wide receiver Jamison Crowder has also noticed a difference in the quarterback's confidence.
“I think he's comfortable with the offense, calling the plays and knowing what to look for as far as coverage and stuff,” says Crowder. “So, I think that's the thing I noticed this year.”
With several players about to turn the corner with injuries and come back into the fold ahead of Week 1, guys are excited about what this squad could look like this year.
“I think we're an extremely well-balanced offense,” says offensive lineman Connor McGovern. “I'm excited for this year, once everyone is back and ready to go for Week 1, I think we're going to be a pretty dangerous offense.

Gase says he hopes to have Mims back at practice by the end of this week. The team’s season opener is Sunday, Sept 13 at 1 p.m. against the Buffalo Bills.
