New Jersey State Police are expected to have extra patrols on hand through New Year’s Day as part of a drunken driving crackdown.

More than 1,600 arrests were made during last year's Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Traffic safety officials report that more than 10,000 people died in drunken driving crashes in 2016, averaging to about 29 deaths per day nationwide.

Nearly 10 percent of those killed in alcohol-related crashes are 14 years old or under.

State police are continuing with the campaign this year. News 12 is told local agencies received $850,000 in grants for the campaign.
