274ds agoExactly five years after the devastation of Hurricane Maria, New Jersey residents say their relatives in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are dealing with the unimaginable following Hurricane Fiona.
"It's scary because I've been trying to speak with my grandfather now for 24 hours," one man with family in Puerto Rico said.
He added that while people in Puerto Rico are "old school" and have persevered before, "they do need necessities."
That's why municipalities like Elizabeth are putting out the call for donations and even using its Puerto Rican Day Parade this weekend to increase turnout.
Elizabeth Avenue and First Street in Elizabeth will be the drop-off location on Sunday, and organizers say not to come empty-handed.
A relief drive by City of Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh and the City Council is gathering nonperishable and hygiene items.
Volunteers are also being encouraged to donate their time at the Hurricane Fiona Relief Drive, scheduled for October.
In Newark, the Puerto Rican Day Parade organizers are thinking about survival packages.
The Jersey City Puerto Rican Day Parade organizers are planning a benefit concert.
