New Jersey drivers hit the road early to beat holiday traffic
AAA expects nearly 2.8 million New Jersey residents to travel for the holidays.

Holiday travel is officially underway, with many New Jersey residents heading out early to reach their destinations.
Nearly 2.8 million residents will travel over 50 miles or more between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1, according to AAA. Around 2.5 million of those travelers will travel by car, while around 193,000 are expected to travel by air.
"This year-end holiday forecast, with a 1.7% increase in New Jersey travelers, mirrors what AAA Travel has been observing throughout 2025," said Tracy Noble, spokesperson for AAA Club Alliance. "Despite the cost, more people are investing in travel to make memories with loved ones and celebrate the holidays."
At the Thomas Edison service area, drivers said they chose to leave ahead of peak travel days to avoid traffic and potential delays. Many told News 12 that while flying may be faster, driving feels more reliable at this time of year.
"I don't mind the traffic," said Joe who is heading to Michigan. "I feel like it's easier than going through TSA and all these flight delays."
According to AAA, the worst travel times on Monday and Tuesday are expected between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Drivers are encouraged to leave before 10 a.m. to avoid the heaviest traffic.
