Demolition of the Nabisco factory is underway, with an implosion still to come.
The deconstruction of the rear of the complex started seven weeks ago. The implosion of the tower is set for April. But the homeowners living in the shadow of the complex say that they are truly afraid of their homes being seriously damaged and what their lungs may be exposed to.
“I’m scared to death when I think about the implosion,” says Bharti Jain.
Bharti Jain and her husband live very close to the demolition zone. Their home sits in the shadow of the iconic Nabisco tower.
"The house keeps shaking every now and then as they keep demolishing,” says Amshuman Jain.
The couple says they have been waking up to the view of the demolition for the last seven weeks. They say that they are worried about what they may be breathing after finding out the building is filled with asbestos.
“I don’t know what we are inhaling with the current demolition that is going on. And what will we be inhaling after they implode this tower,” asks Bharti Jain.
They live in the Iris Park complex, as does Helena Farrell whose husband is in hospice within their home. She says she wonders what she will do if they need to evacuate for implosion day.
"The house is shaking terribly. He's in a bed that has machines that go on and off because of shaking in the house,” Farrell says.
They are waiting for answers as the factory, which has been a part of the community since opening in 1958 in Fair Lawn, comes down.
News 12 New Jersey asked the mayor of Fair Lawn about their concerns. Mayor Kurt Peluso says that Glen Rock residents are welcome to call his office.
"We are making sure that everything is up to code and as of now, we haven't seen anything that hasn't been,” Peluso says.
Those in Iris Park say they have yet to see data concerning seismic readings and air quality.
Peluso says he's excited about the redevelopment project and that he is happy to see that the Nabisco building isn't sitting dormant. He adds that the $1 million in tax ratables the company had been paying will soon return to his borough.
The mayor says he is hopeful new businesses could open in 2024.
An implosion date for the Nabisco plant in Fair Lawn is set to be discussed at a construction meeting on Friday. Glen Rock Council Member Paula Gilligan will represent the town in Friday’s meeting.
