Neighbors are asking many questions about a police shooting in New Brunswick that left an officer injured and the gunman dead.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening outside an apartment building at John Street and New Street. Prosecutors claim Sixto Martinez, of South River, and his girlfriend had a domestic dispute. Martinez allegedly threatened to shoot the woman and then opened fire, shooting Officer Patrick Evans twice. Officers then shot at Martinez, who later died at the hospital, authorities say.
According to neighbors, they never had any issues with Martinez. ?I?ve never seen him have any problems with anybody,? neighbor Allen Vega said. ?He kept to himself. I hardly ever saw him talk to anybody in the neighborhood.?
However, prosecutors say Martinez and his girlfriend had a history of violence.
Neighbors are now questioning the way police handled the situation and if Martinez?s shooting was justified. It is unknown how many shots were fired and how many times Martinez was struck.
Meanwhile, Evans, who was saved by his bulletproof vest, was released from the hospital Wednesday morning.
