Some changes may be coming to the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown, and some neighbors are not happy about it.
The redesign may include hundreds of apartments added to the complex.
“The mall is our biggest taxpayer in town. So we need to make sure we preserve that,” says Eatontown Mayor Dennis Donnelly.
Mayor Donnelly says that the redesign was approved by the planning board earlier this week.
But Sharon Merritt, who lives across the street from the mall, says that she is against the plan.
“It is normal bad traffic year-round,” she says. “But in the summer with the beach and the race track and all that stuff, it’s really bad.”
Heavily-traveled routes 35 and 36 intersect at the mall.
“It makes it really tough for locals to navigate around here in the summer,” says resident Dana Pulizzano. “I’m really concerned that it’s going to cause an issue for traffic.”
Some area residents have filed a lawsuit over the redevelopment.
Others have brought politics into the mix. The mall is owned by Kushner Companies, owned by the family of President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The project still needs state approval and cannot be completed until the issues surrounding the lawsuit are also worked out.
