The Nanuet Public Library is closed as it recovers from Monday's storm.
News 12 is told an outdated roof drain system backed up with water.
“We were able to address it immediately," said Jessica Bowen Ossa, the director.
She and her team were there when water started flowing in.
"We started moving furniture, moving the books, moving computers," she says.
There was damage to carpet, some drywall and a few computers.
The library has since been closed.
Many bookshelves are empty, carpet has been ripped up and pieces of drywall are gone.
More than 5 inches of rain fell in Nanuet on Monday.
The director says the damage happened before the library undergoes major changes in late 2026.
”The good news is that the voters already approved a bond to renovate the whole building, and this is one of the things that we now know to absolutely make sure it can be addressed in the renovation," she says.
News 12 was told part of the drainage system is expected to be repaired next week, but there's still no timeline on reopening.
The Nanuet library says people can still drop their books off, and there will be no late fees.
It is also planning to find creative ways to go out and serve the community until it reopens.
