? Lawyers for the state of New York were in court Friday to make sure the city?s transit union pays up for its strike.
A judge ruled in December the Transport Workers Union (TWU) would have to pay $1 million a day for each day of the strike, which is illegal under New York?s Taylor Law. Union officials counter the $3 million fine would cripple the organization and it disputes the amount, saying workers were on strike for 47 hours. Union members started picketing close to Christmas due to a pension dispute with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The strike ended after a state mediator stepped in. The TWU is asking the MTA to allow its members to revote on the last contract, which was narrowly rejected.
Lawyers are expected back in court April 11.
