Two motorcyclists are facing charges after they allegedly ran into four Union City police officers who were investigating another fatal crash.

Hudson County prosecutors say that Paterson residents Aryan Acosta-Reinoso, 24, and Ricardo Suazo, 25, sped through an accident investigation scene near Palisades Avenue and 31st Street Wednesday afternoon and struck the four officers.

Police say that Suazo crashed and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He was then released into police custody. Officials say that Acosta-Reinoso fled the scene. 

Acosta-Reinoso was arrested at his home in Paterson Thursday morning. He appeared before a judge in Jersey City Thursday afternoon to face several charges, including eluding, aggravated assault and receiving stolen property. Police say that the motorcycle was stolen.

Three of the four officers who were struck were taken to the hospital for treatment. The fourth was treated at the scene. All of the officers are expected to be OK.

Police were investigating a fatal accident involving a teenager at the time of the incident.

Prosecutors say that 16-year-old Sean Lemus was riding his bicycle near Palisades Avenue and 31st Street when he was struck by a garbage truck and pinned under it. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“My heart goes out to the family of Sean Lemus, who died in this tragic accident,” Union City Mayor Brian Stack said in a statement. “I’d also like to ask everyone to keep the injured officers in their thoughts and prayers as these officers recover from their injuries.”

The incident involving the officers comes as the Union City Police Department mourns the loss of three other police officers killed in three separate traffic accidents since December 2016.
