The mother of a Poughkeepsie man who was shot to death by a New Jersey state trooper on the Garden State Parkway last month says that she wants to see the whole video of the encounter.
Maurice Gordon, 28, died on May 23 following an encounter with Sgt. Randall Wetzel. It was Gordon’s fourth encounter with police on the Parkway in a matter of hours. Gordon had run out of gas after driving over 100 mph. Wetzel then let him wait in the police cruiser for a tow truck.
Law enforcement officials say that Gordon twice tried to get into the driver’s seat of the patrol car, and after a struggle outside of the vehicle, Wetzel shot Gordon six times.
“And I want to know why, why this happened? Why shoot my son six times?” says mother Raquel Barrett. “Why can’t we get answers? I just want to get closure. I want to see the end of the video.”

Joined by her attorney William Wagstaff, Barrett spoke about the grief she is feeling since her son died.
“Just to see his face on FaceTime or on WhatsApp, he’d say, ‘Hello my beautiful mommy,’” she says.
The family says that it is important to them to find justice for Gordon – who died just two days before George Floyd in Minnesota – a situation sparking national and international protests.

“There are armed people that are white, they talk them down. Try to find a way that ends peacefully, not bloody. Why is it when it's black and brown people that interact with police, they somehow end up dead?’ asks Wagstaff.
The union that represents Wetzel says that this case is different than the one that led up to the death of Floyd.
The union states that this situation escalated only after Gordon allegedly tried to grab Wetzel’s gun, “not because of police aggression, but despite every attempt to deescalate the situation.”
Wagstaff is calling on the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General to release all police videos from the incident.
