A Morris County animal shelter is competing against a Jersey City shelter and 18 others for a $1 million makeover sponsored by a pets Web site.
St. Hubert's Animal Shelter hosted contest representatives from ZooToo.com Sunday as they surveyed the facility to determine how badly it needs renovations. The shelter has made it into ZooToo.com's top 20 in the contest. Once representatives analyze the top 20 shelters, they will narrow it down to 10 options. Then, the public will select the winner.
"We are one of the oldest shelters in the country," Elizabeth McCorkle, St. Hubert's president, says. "We have a desperate need for help for renovation because we help many other shelters."
According to McCorkle, thousands of animals are cared for each year at the shelter. McCorkle says the facility is falling apart and currently suffers from water damage and a corroded foundation, among other issues. The shelter has a $5 million renovation planned and is looking for donations to afford the construction.
The top 10 will be announced April 7. The $1 million prize consists of donations from builders, suppliers and architects, as well as cash.
