Montclair State University says its study analyzed social media data and the news driving social media conversations about the World Cup.

Argentina's Messi was mentioned in 125,116 tweets, often described as the GOAT - or greatest of all time. Portugal's Ronaldo wasn't far behind with 104,528 mentions.

There were another 76,627 English-language posts observed about sports gambling and the World Cup. Montclair reports the gambling posts carried 2 billion potential impressions and an 84% positive sentiment rate.
