Beaches in Monmouth County reopened Wednesday after test results revealed there was no health hazard from an earlier sewage spill.
Officials posted a swimming ban on beaches from Deal to Northern Bradley Beach Tuesday. They say approximately 250,000 gallons of partially treated sewage dumped into the ocean when a pipe at the Asbury Park Sewage Treatment Plant broke. The sewage was heavily treated with chlorine, but officials still closed the beaches as a precaution due to health risks.
The no-swimming signs were removed after test results showed bacteria levels were within accepted standards.
Meanwhile, the state Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the incident.
