Millions of dollars of taxpayers? money may be lost on the state?s failed bid to turn 800 acres of polluted property into luxury housing and golf courses.
When the Encap project was announced six years ago, it was considered a model for how to clean up contaminated sites. The site, however, is still contaminated, and more heavily polluted dirt was brought in by developers. According to Bergen Record sources, the new dirt was steered to the site by the New York mob.
?Since day one, this has been managed in the very worst way - based on politics and greed and money, instead of proper planning and protecting the state?s interest and the taxpayer's interest,? says Sen. Kevin O?Toole (R).
Attempts by Donald Trump to resuscitate the project last year were rejected. Trenton lawmakers are now calling on Gov. Jon Corzine to appoint a state monitor to probe Encap.
?The taxpayers have been paying for this through the nose, and hopefully we are going to stop the hemorrhage,? says O?Toole.
