The mayor of Middletown is offering to host the annual "Tribute in Lights" event after the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum canceled the tribute this year.

Every year, two beams of light shine over New York City in memory of the victims of the Sept.11 terror attacks.

The museum originally announced it wouldn't hold the event this year because of concerns involving the coronavirus. However, the Tunnel to Towers foundation said late Friday that it planned to shine the beams at a different site.

Mayor Tony Perry is lobbying for the Middletown World Trade Center Memorial Gardens to be the site for the lights. The memorial has monuments for each of the 37 residents of the town who died during the attacks on the World Trade Center in Manhattan.

"There's a way to make things work and it's up to leaders like me and leaders across the country to figure it out and make it work," Perry says. "I know there's a way to make it work and that's why I have offered and would proudly and safely host those lights here in Middletown."
Cranford's police chief also volunteered to host the lights.

It's unclear where the event will happen.
