A Middletown man is among the 12 people who were shot during a video game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, over the weekend.
George Amadeo was a contestant at the “Madden NFL 19” tournament that was being held at the Jacksonville Landing on Sunday. Amadeo was shot in the foot, he has undergone surgery and is in stable condition.
Amadeo posted on Twitter that he was 5 feet from the shooter and his father jumped on him to shield him. Amadeo’s father was not injured.
Jacksonville police say that two people were killed in the shooting when 24-year-old David Katz of Baltimore began shooting people at the tournament. The victims were identified at Elijah “TrueBoy” Clayton and Taylor “Spotme” Robertson.
Police say that Katz had two guns on him, and walked past patrons at the event before targeting gamers in a back room. Witnesses say he was eliminated from the tournament about 15 minutes before the shooting began. The game’s maker, EA Sports, lists a David Katz as a 2017 championship winner.
Police say that Katz’s guns were purchased within the last few weeks. Katz took his own life following the shooting.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
