Mendham Borough held its annual Labor Day parade on Monday.
“We’re off today and it’s just a lot of fun to be able to take a day and appreciate not working,” said resident Ryan Kells.
Residents lined the streets to watch local bands, cheerleaders and other attractions.
Joining the parade was fourth-grader Charlie Russo. He was named honorary mayor for the day. He walked the parade route tossing candy to other children. He was joined by Mayor Christine Serrano-Glassner.
"In this case, it was for a fundraiser. A very good cause. It was for our local schools and Mountain View so it's really a fun thing to do. Legal, it's absolutely legal in this town,” Serrano-Glassner said.
Even though he wasn’t voted in, Russo says he hopes to create a special day where kids are required to “play video games.”
Serrano-Glassner said she hopes to teach Russo the ropes in case he runs for office in the future.
"I hope to teach him that contributing to your community is what makes the community the best place possible to live wherever you are. You have to get back and you have to be present in your community if you want to be a lovely place to live and grow up,” she said.
Russo was sworn in as honorary mayor a couple of weeks ago during a Council meeting.
