New Jersey lawmakers officially started their discussions about next year?s budget early Monday to avoid a repeat of last year?s government shutdown.
The Budget Committee changed its process this year to avoid last-minute arguing. Some of the changes include more public hearings and an earlier deadline. In addition, all proposed budget changes must be made in writing well before the June 15 deadline. The committee now has 95 days to get through all $33 billion in proposed spending.
Public hearings on the budget will begin March 13. This year there will also be two more public hearings at the end of the budget process for residents to hear if lawmakers implemented their suggestions.
