Meet the social media team behind New Jersey’s snarky official Twitter account
Official state Twitter accounts are often boring and dry – simply tweeting out relevant information state residents need to know.
But ever since New Jersey opened an official Twitter account in April, some have noticed that New Jersey’s account stands out from all the rest. Pinned to the top of the account is a quoted tweet from a user asking, “Who let New Jersey have a Twitter.” The response from the official state Twitter account? “your mom.”
“Straight from my middle school memories, you know what I mean? ‘Your mom,’” says Pearl Gabel, one of two women behind the account.
The other woman is Megan Coyne.
“It's part of our effort to bring Jersey attitude, Jersey style to the Twitter account. So that tweet perfectly encapsulates what we're doing,” Coyne says.
Edwin Torres rounds out the Murphy administration social media team. The Twitter feed is only a small part of what they do. But it is the one getting the most attention.
The feed is full of snarky quips, rifts on popular memes and Jersey culture. One recent tweet simply said “Gabagool,” – a New York/New Jersey Italian way to say capicola.
Gabel says that she wrote that tweet because she was looking forward to eating her friend’s mother’s Italian cooking over the holidays.
“Gabagool is like the funniest word and it just really resonates with New Jerseyans,” she says. “And that’s it. That’s our holiday post. I don’t even know if we’re going to do a ‘Merry Christmas’ or ‘Happy Hanukkah’ or anything. ‘Gabagool’ may be our holiday post.”
The team says that once they hook the public with the fun stuff, they throw in informational tweets like how to sign up for health insurance or weather warnings. They also add in political and policy stuff like updates on bill signings.
But it is the snark, the pluck and the pride in New Jersey that is the secret behind the account’s success.
“It’s very, very real. And it’s very, very much like our Jersey Girl selves,” says Gabel.
As of Friday, evening the @NJGov account had over 103,000 followers.
