A Medford Lakes police officer rescued a woman from a vehicle that crashed into a lake early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Officer Jake Tapia was on Stokes Road around 5 a.m. when he heard a loud crash followed by a woman screaming for help, according to the Medford Lakes Police Department.

Tapia responded and found a vehicle that had crashed into Ballinger Lake near the intersection of Stokes Road and Lenape Trail. The vehicle was about 30 feet into the water.

Tapia called in the emergency, swam to the vehicle and helped the driver - a 25-year-old woman from Lumberton - safely back to shore, police said.

The woman was treated at the scene by Lumberton Township EMS and taken to Virtua Mount Holly Hospital for evaluation. Police said she was treated and later released.

Details surrounding what led up to the crash were not immediately available.
