A Bellport man was convicted of assault on Friday for hitting a sober house resident in the head with a metal bat, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities say the incident began when they received a 911 call from the Bellport facility on Sept. 11, 2022.

Upon arrival, officers found the victim with a large wound on the left side of his forehead.

He was sent to Long Island Community Hospital for treatment, according to authorities.

Surveillance footage revealed that Reginald Sonds had interacted with the victim before returning to his own bedroom, retrieving the bat, entering the victim’s room and initiating the assault.

Investigators say the 60-year-old attempted to conceal the bat between his roommate’s bed and the wall.

Sonds was found guilty during a bench trial and is due back in court for sentencing on June 11.

He faces up to seven years in prison.
