His rival was aboard his plane and preparing for takeoff whenMcCain announced he was reversing his decision to skip the forum inorder to address the economic crisis. He had said he would onlyattend if Congress took action on the situation.
McCain met with Republican leaders this morning on Capitol Hilland later blamed others in Washington for the failure to reach anagreement.
An Associated Press-Knowledge Networks poll released just beforeMcCain's announcement today showed the public overwhelmingly wantedthe candidates to debate.
McCain supporter Mike Huckabee says McCain made a "hugemistake" by even discussing canceling the debate. The formerchallenger for the GOP nomination says it's more important forvoters to hear from the presidential candidates than to have themhuddling with fellow senators in Washington.
