A new method of bringing money into churches is on the table, but not everyone in Pequannock Township is happy about it.
A deal is currently in the works between the Bible Christian Fellowship Church and Verizon Wireless to put a cell phone tower on top of the church. Councilman Ed Engelbart says the churches are encouraged by such deals because there is a guaranteed sum of money they would get each year for the tower rental.
Some residents wonder if wireless companies are intentionally targeting churches and other non-profits who need cash.
Verizon spokesperson David Sandberg said, ?We are in no way targeting churches. We just put up towers in locations that have been identified as needing coverage improvement.?
Verizon Wireless says throughout all of northern Jersey, there are only two churches that have leased space for cell phone towers.
