Many residents in Wayne spent part of their Memorial Day to reflect on the meaning behind the holiday Monday.
Hundreds lined up along Valley Road to watch the town?s annual Memorial Day parade. Many say the day means more than just barbeques, sales at the mall and a day off from school.
Memorial Day was first proclaimed in 1868 as a day to remember members of the military who made the ultimate sacrifice. Resident Kathy Gibbons, whose son is in the military, says she?s aware of the true meaning. She feels it?s important to keep those fighting overseas in thoughts and prayers.
?I just hope the country keeps in mind the sacrifices that these young men and women are making and putting their civilian lives on hold,? Gibbons said.
