As tax season begins, many Americans could see larger refunds this year due to recent changes to the tax code.

The Treasury Department estimates refunds will average about $1,000 more per household.

Officials say that increase is largely because many filers did not adjust their withholdings when recent income tax breaks took effect.

A new law boosts the individual standard deduction by $750 and doubles that increase for married couples.

It also expands state and local tax deductions and provides a new tax break for some seniors.
