A man and a woman were found fatally shot inside a Nyack home Saturday after a reported domestic incident, police say.
Authorities made multiple attempts to contact the residents of 290 North Midland Ave. before sending a SWAT team to the scene.
Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of the 52-year-old man and 55-year-old woman.
Authorities say a shotgun believed to be the weapon used in the killing was also recovered from the home.
Orangetown police say they have not received any previous reports of domestic incidents at the location.
Just one day after the discovery, a News 12 crew observed workers in a van belonging to a crime scene cleaning company removing items from the home.
Neighbors told News 12 that they are shocked by the deaths of the man and woman. One man, who declined to give his name, shared his views on the neighbors who lived next door and who were once considered friends.
"We believe, me and my partner, that either prior to Covid or during Covid, things changed dramatically. We no longer had a relationship, we were no longer in their company and there were a number of incidents, that I don't want to get into right now, that scared us," he said.
In the wake of the deaths, a community meeting and show of support was held Sunday evening at Nyack High School. Classmates, friends and family members, including the now-deceased couple's teenaged son, attended the gathering.
"He felt very supported. This community, his school, his friends, their parents were very supportive of him and have offered everything that one would want a young surviving victim to receive," said Elizabeth Santiago, CEO of the New City-based nonprofit, Center for Safety & Change. The agency provides services to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
