Man who held cops at bay for 35 hours charged with murder
The man accused of holding police officers at bay for 35 hours in a standoff in Trenton has been charged with killing a bystander.
Tyleeb Reese, 35, was charged Friday with murder in the shooting of 56-year-old Robert Powell Jr.
Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri said Powell was caught in the crossfire after Reese began shooting at law enforcement Wednesday morning. Onofri said Powell was killed by a shot to the back and was also hit in the ankle and hip.
“Mr. Powell was an innocent bystander who was walking home from a local store,” Onofri said. “He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Authorities say that Reese started shooting at U.S. Marshals who were serving a warrant for his arrest Wednesday morning. The warrant was for a failure to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law.
Reese surrendered Thursday evening after a 35-hour standoff. Three Mercer County sheriff's officers suffered minor injuries and were treated at a hospital. Reese is also charged with five counts of attempted murder and weapons offenses.
Officials say that Reese complained of chest pains while in jail and was taken to the hospital.
