Police tape sectioned off the intersection of Grand Concourse and East Burnside Avenue after a deadly shooting on Thursday morning.
Investigators said they responded to a call of an assault at 2051 Grand Concourse around 2:35 a.m.
Police found a man shot in the chest and groin. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital but did not survive.
Crime Scene Unit investigators canvassed the area, laying 10 evidence markers throughout the Grand Concourse.
It's unclear what led up to the shooting and no arrests have been made.
Residents who live near the scene said they woke up to several gunshots and went to their windows and saw a man lying on the sidewalk bleeding.
"It was just very horrible to watch him as he was breathing, possibly his last breath," said Ana McCullough, who lives nearby. "It was just really difficult."
The victim has not been identified.
