A man convicted of killing a state trooper in the 1970s has been denied parole.

Sundiata Acoli shot and killed trooper Werner Foerster and injured trooper James Harper during a traffic stop in East Brunswick in 1973. He was sentenced to life plus 24 to 30 years in prison.

During his parole hearing, Acoli said Foerster was probably killed by friendly fire.

Also in his car was Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur. Officials say she escaped.

The incident put her on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist list and was the subject of a multi-state manhunt.

She has been living in Cuba despite U.S. efforts to have her returned.
