A Camden man is in custody after police say he broke into an elderly couple’s Collingswood home, assaulted and threatened them before fleeing with cash and gold coins.

Jose Sanabria, 32, is facing multiple counts of assault, armed robbery, home invasion and weapons possession in connection with the incident.

According to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, on May 31 at about 3:30 a.m., police responded to the East Summerfield Avenue home of an elderly couple in their 80s for reports of a home invasion robbery. Police spoke with the husband, who reported that two men entered his home. The men began punching him in the face and demanded to know the location of gold coins in the home. The victim said one of the suspects was armed with a pocketknife.

The suspects dragged the man to the upstairs area of the house, where his wife was found on the floor with a bag over her head. The suspects threatened the couple and eventually located currency and approximately $5,000 in gold before fleeing.

Investigators used surveillance video, cellular data and other evidence to identify Sanabria as one of the suspects. He was charged on June 23 and later located in Philadelphia, where he was arrested. He is awaiting extradition back to New Jersey. Police are still searching for the second suspect.
