The main Paterson library has finally reopened to the public after being forced to shut down for two years due to COVID-19.
The Southside branch and three others in neighborhoods across Paterson did reopen in July 2021 but the hours were limited because of COVID and staffing issues. The main branch, known as the Danforth Library, officially reopened Monday.
Mayor Andre Sayegh and the library director said due to budget constraints, COVID restrictions and staffing issues they could have either opened just the main building or the four satellite branches.
Library director Corey Fleming says it was beneficial to residents of Paterson to open branches and then provide services to those branches out of the main branch.
"In an urban city like Paterson a lot of residents walk to their local branches, so we had to make sure library services were spread out thru out the city. If you open one branch location - other residents in underserved areas wouldn't receive library services."
The main branch has been open for things like curbside book pick up, virtual offerings like library card sign up, and appointments for other services like research and printing.
All locations are now open for regular services, including the use of computers and technology -- a vital part of what they do for residents who may not otherwise have internet access.
Hours remain limited with all branches closing at 5 p.m. The branches are only open during the week.
