Travis the New Jersey turkey is one lucky bird.

The turkey was officially pardoned Monday by Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way at Stew Leonard’s Supermarket in Paramus.

And Travis isn’t alone. He will be sent to a Connecticut farm to live out his remaining days along with his girlfriend Taylor who is also being pardoned at a Stew Leonard’s store in the state.

About 46 million turkeys are eaten on Thanksgiving. Turkey has been considered a Thanksgiving staple beginning from the first accounts of the holiday in 1621.

President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. He was also the first president to pardon a turkey in 1863.

The official presidential turkey pardon was declared a tradition in 1989 by President George H. W. Bush.
