A Lindenwold man has been convicted of kidnapping and attempting to murder his girlfriend in a 2024 shooting, authorities said.
Akeem B. Morton, 33, was found guilty on March 13 of kidnapping and attempted murder following a trial in Superior Court, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.
The charges stem from a Dec. 15, 2024, incident in Gibbsboro. Police responding to a report of a shooting at the intersection of Clementon Road and Haddon Avenue found blood and several shell casings, but no victim. Authorities later learned the victim had been taken to Jefferson Stratford Hospital, police said.
An investigation found that Morton and the victim had been arguing inside a vehicle when he refused to let her out and drove away. The woman eventually escaped by jumping from the vehicle. Morton then shot her multiple times, forced her back into the car and drove her to the hospital, prosecutors said.
Morton was taken into custody at the hospital and later remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility, authorities said.
He is scheduled to be sentenced May 8 and faces a mandatory life sentence under New Jersey's persistent offender statute, according to officials.
