A street takeover in Secaucus turned riotous and violent toward police overnight.
Video shared by the police department shows fireworks set off right next to police vehicles. It happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday on County Avenue and Secaucus Road.
Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller said the conditions his staff responded to were like “a war zone.” It happened near the Motor Vehicle Commission, and not far from a neighborhood and a large business park.
More than 12 hours later, the road was streaked with tire tracks from burnouts and donuts from what police say was more than 100 vehicles.
Police say participants were hanging out of windows and eventually jumped on top of police cars. No officers were injured. Several departments were called for mutual aid.
Chief Miller says police are directing extra resources to investigate. There were no arrests on scene.
“Their decision-making of not to exit their vehicles to engage a crowd that outnumbered them probably in the vicinity of 50-to-1 is good decision-making on their part,” said Chief Miller. “This lawlessness will not be tolerated in Secaucus.”
The chief added that these kinds of incidents are not unfamiliar in the area, but the size and violence of this one was unusual.
News 12 reached out to the social media account that posted the video that police shared, but has not heard back.
