Lightning is to blame for sparking a fire at an inactive landfill in Hudson County.
The fire was reported at the 1D Landfill off Bergen Avenue in Kearny just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. This is an inactive landfill that has not taken new garbage in years.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has been in the process of cleaning up this landfill so that it can be capped off.
The mayor of Kearny tells News 12 New Jersey there is no threat to the public at this time. But he says crews are monitoring the methane gas that landfills typically produce in order to avoid any additional danger.
The 1D Landfill is located close to the Keegan Landfill – a landfill that local residents have been petitioning to have shut down due to concerns about noxious fumes.
