A U.S. Department of Health and Human Services study released Thursday showed certain types of cancers were elevated in one Hamilton Township neighborhood. The study found higher than normal rates of bladder cancer in men, brain cancer in women and leukemia in both men and women living in the vicinity of Mercer and Hughes Streets. The government conducted the study after local residents began to suspect there were more cancers in their neighborhood than there should be.One area singled out for testing, Sayen Gardens, was a dumping ground for the former Mercer Rubber Company. However, the site tested free of contaminants in this latest study. Former plant employees say contaminants were sometimes dumped elsewhere. The Department of Environmental Protection has plans to test those locations.
