Residents in Leonia got the chance to weigh in on the proposed light rail for Hudson and Bergen counties at a public hearing tonight.

The plan calls for modernizing existing freight train tracks so the light rail line can be extended. The tracks would be extended from Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen for nine stops over 12 miles to Tenafly, at a cost of about $870 million.

Supporters say the new trains would help alleviate a lot of traffic congestion. Others say that they think the train will add more traffic to towns that have stations created in them.

The federal government has the final say on whether the project will be built. There are more public meetings scheduled for later this month in Tenafly and Englewood.
