The list of Paterson teachers set to be laid off has been released.

The Board of Education has chosen 43 teachers among more than 90 employees within the district set to lose their jobs due to budget cuts. The list details positions and schools however no specific names, only a corresponding employee number. Among the employees targeted there are six math teachers, one chemistry teacher and 12 cafeteria monitors.

The Paterson teachers union pushed back on the school board’s decision fearing overcrowding and a reduction in one to one interaction between teacher and student.

“If a position that’s abolished no longer exists, that means class sizes, it’s a mathematical equation, class sized would have to increase based upon having less sections of a subject matters," said John McEntee, president of the Paterson Education Association.

The Paterson Board of Education was able to achieve a balanced budget with an 8% increase in local taxes. School employees on the list will be formally notified on Monday.

Layoffs take effect on July 1. There’ll also be transfers taking place for some current school staff.
