New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin said two police officers, one from the Woodbridge Police Department and one from the NYPD, were shot overnight on duty while attempting to locate a homicide suspect in Woodbridge.
Platkin says the suspect was shot and killed at the scene. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
According to the Attorney General's Office and the New Jersey PBA, both police officers are expected to be OK.
A large police presence, including prosecutors and the NYPD, could be seen outside Royal Albert's Palace on Thursday morning. The event venue is part of the Raritan hotel, near Raritan Center.
Initial reports are that police arrived around midnight. A towing company was also on the scene.
“No police officer – or any member of law enforcement – should ever face this violence while performing their duties. Officers take enormous risks on a daily basis to keep our communities safe,” Platkin said.
The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is investigating the incident. Platkin says details of the incident will be released later today.
