Landowner drops plans for dispensary but still wants pot farm
A Brick Township landowner has dropped plans to open a medical marijuana dispensary, but still wants to open a marijuana farm – despite opposition from the community.
Property owner Anne Davis says that she hoped that abandoning plans to sell medicinal marijuana would quell the outrage among neighbors. However, this does not seem to be the case.
“The neighbors are actually more upset now,” says homeowner Alex Marcopul. “Our fight wasn’t against a dispensary itself. It wasn’t to stop people from getting medicine. It was about the 50,000-square-foot warehouse that’s going to go in the middle of the woods.”
Davis says that she is going to now focus on the farming and cultivation of marijuana in a proposed 48,000-square-foot growing house behind the old Ocean First Bank in town. Her attorney tells News 12 New Jersey that it would make it easier to get the approval from the township since the area is zoned in an agricultural district. The marijuana grown there would be sold to medicinal and recreational dispensaries out of town.
But Marcopul says that this still would not work, because since the plan is to sell the grown marijuana commercially, it would not fit the allowed land use.
"We have over 1,000 people now in the neighborhood…that are joining the fight, contributing to the lawyers’ funds and everything,” he says.
Marcopul says that Davis should just move her proposed growhouse somewhere else that neighbors support.
