The Lakewood Police Department is mourning one of its own.

Officer William Preslar, 36, was killed in an early Monday morning car crash. The police chief says Preslar was responding as backup when he swerved to avoid a deer and his car collided into a tree. The crash was captured on the surveillance camera in the patrol car.

Police say Preslar was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Investigators have not determined if speed was a factor in the crash.

Preslar leaves behind a wife and two young daughters. Grief counselors will be on hand for Preslar?s fellow officers. Funeral services are scheduled for the end of this week.
