As the chief financial officer of Edison Township, Janice Saponaro manages $150 million of taxpayer money. A Kane in Your Corner investigation found Saponaro has problems with her own finances.

According to federal tax liens, Saponaro and her husband owe nearly $300,000 in back taxes and penalties. The liens date back to 2004.

When Kane in Your Corner asked Saponaro about the owed money, she said she doesn't know much about the tax liens because they stem from her husband's construction business, which fell on hard times. She also says her family's financial problems are personal and have nothing to do with her job, maintaining that the liens and her duties as CFO are separate issues. Saponaro can only serve as acting finance officer since she failed one half of the certification exam seven times. Saponaro was hired after Edison's last financial officer, Frank Derosa, was arrested for allegedly stealing town funds. She can serve for a year without passing the certification test. Edison mayor Toni Ricigliano says she had no idea Saponaro owed the IRS money.
