The Kinnelon School District is mulling a policy that would allow random drug and alcohol testing for students.

The proposal has been met with mixed feelings among parents and students. If the policy is adopted, Kinnelon would join approximately 30 other districts in the state to have random drug testing.

"There are a lot of students in our school who get straight A's, or A's and B's," says student Cary Feliciano. "So what if they drink or anything?"

Superintendent James Opiekun says one part of the policy would include the "Friday night" test, a urine sample that can detect alcohol consumption up to 80 hours prior. Opiekun says the test would help parents know what trouble their kids are up to.

"Parents, once they're aware of the issue, really step in and get kids help and make sure they get on the right track," says Opiekun.

Under the policy, students with parking permits who test positive for drugs or alcohol would lose their permit for 30 days.
