Nearly 2,000 college students die each year in alcohol related incidents. Kane in Your Corner is examining what can be done to curb binge drinking on New Jersey's campuses.
One controversial idea to curb the disturbing trend comes from a group of college presidents. The administrators believe the 21-year-old drinking age is not working and debate needs to be had on how to better stem unsafe drinking. The movement is called the Amethyst Initiative.
The Amethyst Initiative states that the current drinking age fails a number of ways. Signatories believe respect for the law is eroded in teenagers who circumvent the rule. They also believe the abstinence mentality has not fostered "significant constructive behavioral change" in their students.
Critics say lowering the drinking age would lead to younger and younger drinkers, as well as an increase in overall drinking.
