(AP) - An Essex County jury on Monday acquitted two men of murder in the shooting death of a police officer outside a Newark high school.

Kahlil Tutt was convicted of reckless manslaughter and other charges, while Hassan Reeds was only convicted on a single charge of receiving stolen property.

Tutt and Reeds were charged with murder, attempted murder and other charges stemming from the fatal shooting of Special Officer Dwayne Reeves in July 2005 outside Weequahic High School. Fellow officer Akhia Scott was wounded in the incident.

Tutt faces about 15 years following his convictions on reckless manslaughter, unlawful weapons possession, receiving stolen property, drug possession and making a terroristic threat, said Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Reeds could face a few years in prison.

Tutt, 28, and Reeds, 34, accused the other of doing the shooting. Both remain in custody pending sentencing, Dec. 13 for Tutt and Dec. 10 for Reeves.

According to authorities, the shooting stemmed from a feud between Tutt's sister and another girl. The dispute began when the two met in summer school and erupted when classes let out July 18.

The melee outside the school drew the attention of Reeves, whose call for backup summoned Scott; both officers were assigned to the high school.

Meanwhile, Tutt and Reeds arrived in a stolen white Chrysler and began threatening some of the girls, police said. As the officers attempted to handcuff Tutt and Reeds, Tutt allegedly pulled a gun and fired one shot, hitting Reeves in the head.

The four-year police veteran died a few hours later at University Hospital in Newark. Scott suffered a hand injury from the same shot that killed his partner. He returned fire, strikingTutt twice.
