A Mercer County judge has given the state of New Jersey a New Year?s deadline to certify that paper backups for the state?s voting machines are working.
Unless the state can prove that voting machines have paper backups by January 1, a trial date will be set to determine if the machines are unconstitutional.
State officials say the system will not be ready by then.
?We don?t want to rush it,? said Robert Gilson, attorney for the state. ?We want to get it right and that increases the public?s trust and respect for the procedure.?
Critics of the state, such as plaintiff Stephanie Harris, believe the state is not looking out for voters? interests.
?The state hasn't been representing the public,? said Harris.
