Jersey City is taking new steps to protect pedestrians, with barriers and speed humps coming to 17 high-crash intersections.

Mayor James Solomon announced the turn-hardening initiative as part of the city’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries.

The changes are meant to force drivers to make slower, tighter turns, giving them more time to see pedestrians in crosswalks.

“People have been hurt and killed at these intersections, and far too often it was because a driver took the turn too fast,” Solomon said.

City data shows 1,824 crashes involving injuries or deaths were classified as left-turn or right-turn crashes from 2019 through part of 2026. Those crashes included seven fatalities and 80 cases involving suspected serious injuries.

The first three intersections receiving the changes are Central Avenue and Congress Street, Summit Avenue and Leonard Street, and Summit Avenue and Manhattan Avenue.

The remaining 14 locations are scheduled for improvements this fall and in spring 2027.

The initiative builds on the city’s broader pedestrian safety efforts. Solomon said the city is also working on 100 safety improvements at 80 other locations across Jersey City.

The city says the results from the initial 17 intersections will help guide potential expansion of the program in the future.
