A Jersey City neighborhood was shut down Sunday after a road caved in, trapping a fire truck and damaging water, gas and heat service to the area.
Fire officials say a resident on Linden Avenue called for emergency help when Rosemary Canzano noticed her basement was covered in 2 feet of water. Firefighters were responding to the call at around 9 a.m. when the street began to crumble and cave in, trapping their truck in a sinkhole.
Witnesses say the street has a history of disrepair and was recently re-paved by the state. Residents say they noticed a small hole, which quickly grew in size. Neighbors say as the street began to cave in, it sounded like a pile of bricks was falling down.
Jersey City's fire director says the sinkholes have formed because most of the dirt supporting the road was washed away by a water main break that went undiscovered for days or weeks.
Fire officials brought in a crane Sunday evening to remove the truck. According to the fire director, repairs on Linden Avenue will begin this week.
